Abstract

The battle of Balkan had not even come to a logical end that the painful event of Kanpur mosque took place. The Muslims of India were busy consoling their Arab & Turk brothers that this dreadful event dragged all of the attention. A mosque famously known as Machli Bazaar Mosque was situated on Meston Road, Kanpur. In order to extend the road, the British government demolished a portion of the aforesaid mosque while keeping the temple on its way undisturbed. The Muslims violently protested against the demolition and this news was brought to the headlines of all leading newspapers. "Zameendaar" & "Al-Hilal" strongly condemned the demolition.

Few Non-Muslim authorities also regretted this demolition. In reaction to this harsh event, Indian Muslims moved a countrywide movement against the British government. Many prominent men of letters including Syed Suleiman Nadwi, Hasan Nizami, Shibli Nomani and Maulana Zafar Ali Khan recorded their protest through poetry and prose. Finally, this strong and violent public reaction brought the British government on their knees and the decision was taken back. All prisoners were released and criminal cases were withdrawn. The demolished portion of the Kanpur mosque was rebuilt by the government. The event of  Kanpur mosque provoked the first protesting behaviour against the British Colonialism. This actually led the nation to the road of independence afterwards. Thus this event is of great importance in the history of Indian Sub-continent.
