Abstract

During the course of 19th century Mufti, Sadaruddin Azurdah (1789-1868) had been an eminent scholar and a renowned literary figure of undivided India. Sir Syed Ahmed Khan ranks him, in his famous book Aasar-ul-Sanadid, as an accomplished theologue. No doubt he was regarded as virtuous, saintly, and reliable in the field of metaphysical branches of knowledge. He played an important role in promotion of Urdu poetry. His literary pursuits earned him a Laurel for his authenticity in Arabic, Persian and Urdu poetry. He was known to be an acquaintance and admirer of Ghalib. His house was a meeting place for scholars, poets, and literary figures. His Urdu poetry is not in multitude but cannot be ignorable because of its impressive style. Though less in quantity, it is rich in quality. It is simple in narration, easy to understand and far from ambiguity. In this article Mufti Sadruddin Azardah's contributions and services towards Urdu language and literature are specifically discussed and analyzed.
