Abstract

Diction is an important dimension of literary linguistics in which language of a literary work is analysed. Mumtaz Mufti's literary works acquire great importance.Samay Ka Bandhan is his 7th collection of short stories published in 1987. In these short stories, those altered values of east are highlighted especially which are influenced by the west and which have affected the east in a bad manner. As Mufti has presented this cultural chaos in a new writing style, he has also experienced new form of diction. In these short stories, his characters can be heard speaking words of Hindi, English and other local languages. For effective communication Mufti has often crafted new words and idioms and has also given new meanings to old words. In this research paper diction used in "Samay Ka Badhan" has been studied in the same perspective.
