Abstract

Dictionary compilation is of great importance in all times but before the 19th century dictionary writing was not a common trend in the subcontinent. Dictionary writing trend began to flourish among the natives of subcontinent in 19th century and its credit goes to orientalists. Before 19th century, the dictionaries written in India were focused on fulfilling educational motives or comprehension of other languages only. In 19th century, few remarkable Urdu dictionaries were compiled in India. Urdu's first comprehensive dictionary Farhang-e-Asifiya was also compiled in the same era. This research paper highlights the introduction alongwith year of publication of Urdu & Persian dictionaries compiled and edited by natives of subcontinent in 19th century.
