Abstract
The early 20th century was an era of upheaval in different Muslim countries, as well as in the sub-continent. In the aftermath of Barkan wars and the First World War, a general restlessness and anxiety was perceptible in certain social and political groups. The poets of Urdu were recording their inner feelings against the backdrop of tragedies taking place in Muslim countries. This article traces the tussle between the feelings of loyalty to the British and patriotism, with examples from urdu poetry composed in the early decades of 20th century.
