Abstract

Siddhartha(1922), well-known work by German author Hermann Hesse,(1877-1962) is a story about one man’s search for self –realization. In this novel The Siddhartha searches for truth and enlightenment, difference between knowledge and understanding, the nature of truth, and the unity of all things. Siddhartha first begins his journey by following those who are also seeking Enlightenment. Themes in Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse include: Alienation of man from man, Alienation of man from environment, Desire for self-knowledge, People can teach religious doctrine, but it may not lead one to find one’s true inner self-Knowledge can be taught, but wisdom comes from experience, Self-discovery, Individuality, Timelessness, Search for self-realization, Dilemma of spiritualism and enlightenment, human nature quest for knowledge and wisdom. In this article effort is made to analyze the central character of given novel.
