Abstract

Rhetorics is an inseparable part of poetry and in Urdu sometimes it is so overwhelming that poetry becomes just a way of showing one’s command over language and rhetorical practices. But the progressive writers of Urdu under the influence of Marxism mostly composed the kind of poetry that turned into mess word-play due to over-emphasis on rhetorics. Yet there are many modern-day progressive writers of Urdu who have artfully used the art of rhetorics to make their poetry more attractive and literarily more acceptable. Such progressive writers include Makhdom Mohiuddin, Faiz Ahmed Faiz, Sahir Ludhyanvi, Kaifi Aazmi and others. The research scholar in this paper has first described some characteristics of rhetoric and then evaluated the poetry of these poets mentioning the use of figures of speech.
